Q

Dear SK8-coach,

When we play a game at the rink and have to stand in one place, my skates keep sliding out from under me. How can I stop that from happening? (Tina)

A

Dear Tina,

To maintain control of your skates, try placing them in a “T” or “Y” or “V” position and squeeze them together.  The most important thing to remember is that you should always stand upright. When you look downward, the skates try to roll backwards … and this can lead to disaster! (Mrs. “M”)

Q

Dear Sk8-coach,

Why do I get blisters when I roller skate? (Robbie)

A

Dear Robbie,

You get blisters (most often on your right foot) because your skates are rubbing the tender skin of your foot. The only way to prevent the rubbing is to make sure your skate boot fits like skin. Try getting a smaller size if you are renting. Whether renting or using your own skates, see that they are firmly laced from toe to top. Remember that skate sizes are different from shoe sizes. (Mr. “M”)
